Describe the setting / environment where you did your observation.
The setting of my observation was in a two family sept located in a residential connection in Brooklyn, New York. The ethnic backgrounds of the community were predominately African Americans and Hispanics. The observation took place in a bedroom, eat room and kitchen
area, and all three areas are within 10 to 15 steps from each other. Due to the fleshly
limitations of this senior person, her girl resides with her. Part of the observation was
in the presence of the home attendant who cares for this elderly person in the absence of her daughter or other family members. In the dimly lit bedroom, in that location is a stereo system, an
adjustable mechanical bed and movable potty.
The entrance to the living area was on the
ground floor, which permitted lightheaded access to the apartment.
Before you arrived, what had you expected to learn from your observation?
I expected to learn techniques utilized by home attendants, in their efforts, to get a defiant elderly person to aid with them. I expected to learn more about the emergence of an elderly person working through their frustrations. Also, how the elderly simulates their physical limitations.
What situational demands on / opportunities for the person did you observe?
This elderly person refused to accept she could no longer perform certain physical activities. This falsify her perception of her daily role in life, which made it problematical in caring for her.
