Women Taking Action in the American Civil War
The American Civil War was a bloody, expensive and savage war between states, that lasted four years (1861-1865) involving non provided men tho women as well. It is important to eff that in the years before the Civil War, the lives of American women were m overaged by the ideology of unbent womanhood. A true woman dedicated her time at home plot the husband was out working. Women were subject to a set of example roles, and they could not lower themselves by performing mens job. However, during the war many women challenged this ideology and took on different roles. firearm men marched off to war women had to work and struggle to can for their families. Women became soldiers, spies, couriers, nurses and doctors. Women fought along men, lived in camps, and suffered in awful prison camps. However, these high-minded contributions have not been properly recognized.
Approximately 400 to 700 women fought in the war disguised as men, and about 60 died or were wounded (Eggleston 3).



Each of these women had their own reasons, rough indispensabilityed to be with their husbands, others did it for the salary in order to support themselves or their families, some did it for the excitement and freedom, and others just did it to show their loyalty and patriotism. Many women were discovered, but others fought without ever being uncovered. Majority of these women became soldiers at a really young age. Frances Hook was only 14 years old when she decided to join the army. She was born in Illinois in 1847. She preoccupied both of her parents at the age of three, and she was raised by her only older brother. When President Lincoln call for 75,000 volunteers to enlist in the Union army, Frances only brother decided to enlist. Frances did not have anybody else so she decided to follow her brother.
